GREENVILLE, Miss.–If you live in Greenville your sewer bill is going up, says Mayor Errick Simmons. He announced in a Tuesday press conference a $5 monthly increase.

The money is being used to help the city stay in compliance with a P{artial Consent Decree from the Environmental Protection Agency, or EPA, that was established in 2016, when the city was found to be in violation of the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System Permit and the Clean Water Act.
To be in compliance the city has had to make steady improvements and that costs money, said Simmons.
“We’ve expended a total of about $92 million to rehab, repair and fund the operations of not only the wastewater treatment plant, but also the sanitary sewer collection system, as well,” he said.
He announced Tuesday that minimum monthly bills will increase from about $64 to about $69.
He pointed out that no other increases were being asked of customers.
