JACKSON, Miss.–The state Senate tax plan to reduce taxes does just that: reduces them, unlike the plan that was passed by the Mississippi House last month, which would eventually eliminate the state income tax.
In a Wednesday Facebook post Lt. Gov. Delbert Hosemann, who presides over the Senate, said the plan would take the state income tax from four percent to 2.99 percent over the next couple of years.
In addition, the state grocery tax would be reduced from seven to five percent.
To help make up for that revenue, you would likely see a 9 cent per gallon add-on tax to gas.
If the Senate passes the plan, the House and Senate would have to work out a compromise between the two plans.
