The “Mean Green Marching Machine,” the renowned marching band from Mississippi Valley State University (MVSU), has received a prestigious invitation to perform at the 60th Presidential Inauguration Parade in Washington, D.C., on January 20, 2025. This historic invitation underscores the band’s longstanding legacy and its cultural significance, not only for the university but also for Mississippi and the broader Historically Black College and University (HBCU) community.

Founded in 1950, the “Mean Green Marching Machine” is no stranger to national recognition. In 1965, the band made history as the first HBCU ensemble to march in the Tournament of Roses Parade. Just three years later, they returned to Pasadena for the event, and in 1969, they performed at President Richard Nixon’s inaugural parade. These milestones have helped cement the band’s reputation as a trailblazer in both musical excellence and cultural representation.

The upcoming inauguration performance is set to continue this proud tradition. However, the cost for the trip is substantial. The university estimates the total expenses for travel, accommodations, meals, and equipment at approximately $350,000. Despite the financial challenges, MVSU is committed to ensuring that every student can participate, regardless of their financial situation.

To help offset these costs, MVSU is calling on its alumni, supporters, and the local community to contribute to this historic effort. The invitation to the Presidential Inauguration Parade not only highlights the band’s past achievements but also reinforces MVSU’s role as a cultural ambassador for Mississippi and the legacy of HBCUs on the national stage.
