Montana Inmates Relocated to Mississippi Private Prison Amid Controversy

TUTWILER, Miss.–About 240 prisoners from Montana are headed to a private prison in the Delta.
The Montana Dept. of Corrections is dividing up 600 inmates between Mississippi and Arizona, saying the move will save them money and allow the state department of corrections to fix some of the public prison facilities there.
They are moving the inmates to the Tallahatchie County Correctional Facility, which is more than 1,800 miles from the Montana facilities, over the objections of some state lawmakers there, who believe it may be a violation of the prisoners’ civil rights.
The Tutwiler facility is also where state Sen. Juan Barnett has suggested Mississippi house about three quarters of the population at Mississippi State Penitentiary at Parchman, to cut down on the population there and save money.
