GREENVILLE, MS — The Community Foundation of Washington County has acquired the Betty Lynn Cameron Fund, a new initiative to support college scholarships for students in Greenville. This fund is named in honor of Betty Lynn Cameron, a dedicated leader whose contributions to the local community and education have left a lasting legacy.

Cameron, who passed away after a lifetime of community service, played an instrumental role in the development of Greenville’s education system. She served as Executive Director of the Greenville Chamber of Commerce, co-founded the Delta Hot Tamale Festival, and became the first female president of the Greenville Rotary Club. Cameron was also key in establishing the Greenville Higher Education Center, which brought university-level classes to the city.

Throughout her career, Cameron remained deeply committed to volunteering, serving on numerous boards, including the Greenville Public Schools Advisory Board, United Way, and the Boys & Girls Club. She was recognized with multiple awards for her service, including the Elks Distinguished Citizenship Award and Delta State University’s Alumnus of the Year.

Despite battling rheumatoid arthritis, Cameron advocated for arthritis awareness at the national level and continued to support her beloved Greenville community. Her legacy lives on through the Betty Lynn Cameron Scholarship Fund, which has provided scholarships to Greenville students since 1986. The fund, now part of the Community Foundation of Washington County, continues to award over 40 scholarships annually.

Applications for the scholarships are due by March 31st. Interested students are encouraged to contact their school counselor for more information.
