ROLLING FORK, Miss.–After a decisive defeat last year in a race against Mississippi’s senior Senator Roger Wicker, Ty Pinkins, an attorney from Rolling Fork is giving the race for U.S. Senate another shot, this time against Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith.

Pinkins announced his run for Senate Thursday, first with a YouTube video and then with a press release.
This time the Democrat is stressing his 21 years of active duty service in the Army and his service under both Republican and Democratic presidents as a selling point.
Pinkins, who was bornin Rolling Fork, began picking and chopping cotton at age 13, choosing the Army as a career at first and later the practice of law. He says this run for Senate will be based on bringing economic opportunities to the state, achieving affordable healthcare for Mississippians and strengthening education.
Pinkins said his focus on healthcare is inspired by the plight of both of his parents, who need care for kidney troubles and must travel three hours round trip from their Delta home to receive it.
“No matter what crisis I’ve seen, nothing tested me more than watching my own family struggle with healthcare,” he said in a video announcement. “The burden of medical bills weighed heavily on our family, just like it does for so many families across Mississippi. No one should have to decide between life-saving care and financial ruin.”
Pinkins faces an opponent who, since being appointed by Gov. Phil Bryant to serve out Thad Cochran’s term in 2018, was re-elected in 2021. She has been in political office steadily for 25 years.
