CLEVELAND, Miss. — The Roy L. and Clara Belle Wiley Planetarium at Delta State University has been awarded a grant from the Community Foundation of Northwest Mississippi to enhance its educational offerings. The grant will fund the purchase of the film Global Soundscapes, which examines the fascinating physics of sound, its production, transmission, and perception.
The new film will be a key addition to the planetarium’s programming, offering a dynamic, interactive experience for viewers. The goal is to connect the scientific study of sound with the rich musical heritage of the Mississippi Delta, while also exploring how sound shapes the region’s natural environment.
“We are thrilled to receive this grant from the Community Foundation of Northwest Mississippi,” said Dr. Maria Weber, Assistant Professor of Physics and Planetarium Director. “This funding allows us to offer unique educational experiences that integrate global music traditions with the acoustics of local ecosystems, showcasing the Delta’s musical legacy and natural beauty.”
The Wiley Planetarium’s new program aligns with the university’s ongoing commitment to providing innovative, interdisciplinary learning opportunities for the community. By incorporating Global Soundscapes into its offerings, the planetarium will offer visitors a captivating exploration of sound that ties together science, culture, and the environment.
