Contentious Hiring of New Road Manager Sparks Legal Questions in Sunflower County

INDIANOLA, Miss.–The Sunflower County Board of Supervisors discussed the hiring of Tim Howell as county road manager this week, after the recent firings of the manager and assistant manager.

Supervisor Glen Donald objected to the hiring of Howell, saying he believes, according to state statute that Howell may not meet the qualifications, saying he must have the proper education or experience.

“All I am saying, legally, you’re not covered,” he said, during a tense discussion.

Donald clashed with Supervisor Riley Rice, who said he believes Donald is stalling when there is business to be done.

“Everyone here knows this has not happened before. We’ve been hiring people for 12 years since I’ve been here and this has never happened,” said Rice.

The board asked the county attorney to review the state statute on the matter to determine whether Howell’s hiring and subsequent acceptance of his bond were done legally.

Donald contends that the decision, which was made during an executive session, was done without the proper vetting.
