YAZOO CITY, Miss.–A tropical system that’s hanging out south of Texas is expected to bring quite a bit of rain to the Delta. The system could turn into a tropical cyclone and bring strong winds, as well.
“It’d be movin in later Wednesday into Wednesday night, persisting into Thursday. That seems to be the main time frame we’re concerned with getting some heavy rain,” said forecaster Eric Carpenter, with the National Weather Service.
The tropics have been fairly quiet this season so far, with Mississippi getting little benefit from any moisture the storms usually bring to our area.
This storm could make up for some of that. Two to six inches of rain are possible in Mississippi, with that total exceeding six inches in some areas, depending on the eventual track of the storm.
“The hurricane center expects this to form into a tropical cyclone eventually and track toward the northwest Gulf of Mexico coastline,” said Carpenter.
He says you could feel some strong winds if the system stays just to our west.
“If the track of the system tends to be just a little more to the west of us there could be some concern for tornadoes,” he said.
Carpenter says watch the forecast. Tropical systems are less predictable than other types of storms.
