GREENVILLE, Miss.–Washington County may be better prepared for emergencies, thanks to a shipment of ready-to-eat meals, approved Monday, by the county Board of Supervisors.
“It’s an MRE, meals, ready to eat. It’s a 1,700 calorie meal in a pack,” said Emergency Management Director David Buford, describing the meals for the supes. “It’s got an entree, beverage, snack, dessert. One meal will feed somebody for a day.”
The meals are being ordered for the county’s emergency shelter, which is the convention center.
Buford said with two pallets, which the board approved, they can feed 350 people for 48 hours. The meals also have a long shelf life, up to five years. So, he does not anticipate the need to order any more any time soon.
The MREs were used to feed people in Senatobia following the March tornado there.
The county also approved the purchase of radio equipment being used to upgrade the county’s warning siren system.
