WASHINGTON–It’s time for Congress to pass a new Farm Bill, says Mississippi Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith. The Republican pointed out Wednesday that just three months remain on the current Farm Bill extension.
“The Farm Bill framework released by our Senate Agriculture Committee ranking member would achieve all of these things, and in a bipartisan, fiscally-responsible manner,” said Hyde-Smith.
“Times are changing. New challenges and threats to rural America emerge every day. This is why Congress revisits this important, multi-year legislation – to keep what’s working, fix what’s not, and eliminate what’s no longer necessary.”
She said a new Farm Bill would benefit farmers in the Mississippi Delta by providing better safety nets like disaster assistance and crop insurance improvements, and would provide better access to credit and financing, particularly for younger farmers who want to get into the business. It would also insure that the programs provided in the Farm Bill, like SNAP, are a “hand up and not a hand out”, she said.
