CLEVELAND, Miss. — Delta State University and its campus police department will host two upcoming training sessions aimed at strengthening public safety efforts and enhancing investigative capabilities for law enforcement agencies across the Mississippi Delta.

The Mississippi Delta Crisis Intervention Team Academy is scheduled for June 8–12 on the university’s campus. The five-day training will take place daily from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Baioni Conference Center in Broom Hall.

The academy is designed to equip first responders with tools and strategies to assist individuals experiencing mental health or addiction-related crises. The program focuses on de-escalation techniques, connecting individuals to appropriate care and improving collaboration between law enforcement and mental health providers.

Organizers say the training also aims to reduce stigma while helping agencies minimize complaints and liability, strengthen community partnerships and improve safety for both officers and the public.

In addition, the Delta State Police Department will host a separate law enforcement training session led by the Federal Bureau of Investigation Jackson Field Office in partnership with the Mississippi Department of Public Safety.
The session, titled “Using CJIS Tools to Assist with Investigations and Intelligence Gathering,” is set for April 28 from 8 a.m. to noon at the Young-Maudlin Cafeteria on campus.

The training will be presented by the FBI’s Criminal Justice Information Services Division and will provide an overview of investigative databases and tools used by law enforcement nationwide. Topics include systems such as the National Crime Information Center, National Data Exchange and the National Instant Criminal Background Check System, along with biometric identification and intelligence-sharing platforms.

The session is open to federal, state, local and tribal law enforcement personnel, including chiefs, sheriffs, investigators, court clerks, dispatchers and booking officers. Participants will receive training credit and have opportunities for networking and discussion following the program.
