Delta State University is proud to announce the creation of its new Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education (BSSE) program, marking a significant step forward in the university’s efforts to develop future educators. The program, which received approval from the Mississippi Department of Education (MDE) at its December meeting, is set to launch in 2025.
The BSSE program was designed to meet the increasing demand for qualified secondary educators in Mississippi. Developed through a collaborative effort between Delta State’s leadership and faculty, the program combines rigorous academic coursework with valuable practical teaching experience. It is intended to equip graduates with the skills and knowledge necessary to succeed in the classroom.
Dr. Leslie Griffin, Delta State’s Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, praised the hard work of the team that made the program possible. “This fantastic news is the result of the diligent team and leadership that shepherded the process,” said Griffin. “Under Dr. Merideth Van Namen’s leadership, alongside the contributions of content faculty and the tenacity of Mandy Johnson and Anjanette Powers in navigating licensure processes, the program came together in an effective and timely manner despite many challenges.”
The introduction of the BSSE program reflects Delta State’s ongoing commitment to preparing the next generation of educators to meet the challenges of an evolving educational landscape. The university is excited about the opportunities the program will provide for students seeking to pursue careers in secondary education.
