GREENVILLE, Miss.–Denver Air Connection has been selected as the new airline service provider for the Greenville Mid-Delta Airport. The selection was made Tuesday during a twu-hour city council meeting, three days before the deadline to select a carrier.
“I have a little bit of concern and I was warned against Contour does not have a gate at Atlanta yet,” said Airport Director Levell Hawkins, when recommending Denver.
Hawkins said his recommendation was also based on what the people wanted.
Residents of Greenville and the Delta were allowed to visit with representatives from all three airlines competing to be the service provider. He said during a presentation that a survey after the Monday presentation and Q&A indicated people wanted access to Atlanta.
Denver has ready service to Atlanta and Dallas, with 12 flights per week each.
A representative from Contour Airlines, the current provider, spoke for roughly a half hour, offering service to Atlanta. But, other factors were considered, like delays and breakdowns, which people listed as complaints in the survey.
“This decision marks a significant development in the city’s efforts to enhance regional air connectivity,” read a news release from the city Wednesday. Greenville and Washington County have three large-scale projects going on, including the construction of a new power plant and two pipelines, which necessitate reliable transportation.
The county also hopes to leverage that into new economic development opportunities.
