JACKSON, Miss..-Gov. Tate Reeves was one of the first Mississippi politicians to react to what may have been an attempt to assassinate former Pres. Donald Trump at a rally Saturday afternoon in Butler, Penn.

“Pray for President Donald Trump! Pray for the Trump family! Pray for the attendees at the rally! And please…,” read the post by Reeves on X.

Reeves was endorsed in a video by Trump during last year’s election.

“Pray for America! God’s protection and grace, along with the vigilance of patriots, is the only shield against evil,” urged Reeves.

At least two people were reported dead at the rally. One was an attendee. The other was the shooter, according to the Butler County prosecutor.

“Prayers for President Trump. Glad he was able to walk away,” read a simple Tweet from Sen. Roger Wicker.

Mississippi House Speaker Jason White, a Republican representing Holmes and Attala counties, Tweeted similar sentiments, saying political violence is unacceptable.

“We pray for the safety and recovery of President Trump and his family. Violence and actions like we saw today have no place in political discourse. May God continue to bless the United States of America,” he said.

Rep. Bennie Thompson, who represents the Delta, Attala and parts of Leake County in Washington, also decried political violence in a Tweet.

“There is no room in American democracy for political violence. I am grateful for law enforcement’s fast response to this incident. I am glad the former President is safe, and my thoughts and prayers go out to everyone involved,” he said.

Thompson, Ranking Member of the House Homeland Security Committee, has promoted a bill that would effectively strip Trump of Secret Service protection, should he have to serve prison time.

Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith Tweeted that she is sickened by the attempt on Trump’s life.
