Lawmakers Discuss Future of Old Harrah’s Casino

TUNICA COUNTY, Miss.–Some people in Tunica County are concerned that the old Harrah’s Casino hotel could be used to house unaccompanied minors in the country illegally as part of a federal program. That concern was heightened Monday when the Board of Supervisors considered a possible buyer for the property in executive session.

But, Sheriff “K.C.” Kemp says he believes that would be a bad idea, mainly because the county has no hospital.

“We do not have the adequate resources to support or accommodate the Immigrants Initiative,” said Kemp in a statement released to reporters.

“When it concerns public safety, public healthcare, along with child protective services; Tunica County does not have a local hospital in the event of an emergency. We have to transport our patients to area hospitals located in Desoto County, Tate County, Clarksdale and Memphis, Tennessee.”

Meanwhile, in Washington, Mississippi Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith released a video Thursday criticizing a Democratic immigration bill she believes would not gelp the immigration situation.

“No one should be fooled by Senator Schumer’s sham border security vote.  It’s a cynical ploy to try to deflect public attention away from President Biden’s ongoing and avoidable border crisis and to shield congressional Democrats who have aided and abetted in creating a crisis that has permitted almost 10 million illegal immigrants to enter our nation,” said the Senator.

“I’m all for securing our borders and reforming our legal immigration processes.  Biden’s border crisis is a national security, economic, and humanitarian mess that deserves thoughtful, constructive ideas, not political gimmicks.  This vote is nothing more than an attempt to distract from all the other votes where Democrats have avoided doing anything tangible to combat illegal immigration and secure our borders.”

The bill failed a test vote Thursday.
