LAUDERDALE, COUNTY, MS (Ben Caxton) — Lauderdale County Chancellor Judge Charles Smith hopes doctors will clear him to return the bench soon. Smith was shot March 16th in downtown Meridian; a bullet tore through his hip, clipped his femoral artery, split the ball-and-socket joint in his left hip, and exited in front where the leg joins the torso. Smith has gone through multiple surgeries but feels fortunate to have survived. Judge Smith did not see the shooter and no arrests have been made. The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is investigating and East Mississippi Crimestoppers has offered a reward of up to $32,000 for information that leads to an arrest.
