JACKSON, Miss.–Is he trying to make sure the former president gets hurt? That’s thenquestion Gov. Tate Reeves asked of Congressman Bennie Thomspson in a Facebook post Sunday. Reeves criticized Thompson for proposing a law that would remove Donald Trump from Secret Service protection, if convicted of a felony, which happened last week.
“The Secret Service is there for protection. But, that protection stops when it is determined that individual has broken the law,” explained Thompson in an April appearance on MSNBC. He was pushing the Denying Infinite Security and Government Resources Allocated Toward Convicted and Extremely Dishonorable Former Protectees Act, or the DISGRACED Act, unabashedly aimed at Trump.
Thompson served as chair of the Jan. 6 Committee.
“The moment that person is convicted they lose that protection,” explained Thompson.
Reeves rebuked the Congressman, who represents the Delta as part of Mississippi’s 2nd District.
“Bennie Thompson has crossed a line that is embarrassing for our state – and dangerous for our country,” said Reeves’s post. “His work to remove secret service protection from Donald Trump and leave him vulnerable (after a sham trial) begs the question….is it his goal to make it more likely that his political opponent is assassinated?”
“Truly shameful, outrageous, and a new low for the leftwing in America,” the posy continued. “Bennie Thompson owes every Mississippian – and every American – an apology!”
Reeves has no power over Thompson, or vice-versa.
