MOUND BAYOU, Miss. — A new youth-focused crime prevention initiative aimed at reducing gun violence and promoting positive life choices will launch April 30 in Mound Bayou, city officials announced.
The initiative, titled “Don’t Do It,” is part of a broader “Put Down the Gun” movement designed to engage young people through community-centered activities and outreach.
The event is scheduled for 5:45 p.m. to 7:15 p.m. at Mound Bayou City Hall, located at 106 Green St. W. Organizers say the program will include a video game tournament, refreshments, food for youth participants and remarks from two inspirational speakers.
City leaders say the effort is intended to provide young people with positive alternatives while encouraging them to avoid violence and make purpose-driven decisions.
“We’re creating an atmosphere where our youth can have fun, be fed, be inspired and hear a message that can change their future,” organizers said in a statement.
The initiative emphasizes community involvement and aims to foster connection while addressing youth violence through engagement and mentorship.
“This is more than an event — it’s a movement,” the statement said. “Put the guns down. Choose life. Choose purpose.”
The event will be hosted by Rickey Scott and Leighton Aldridge. Organizers say additional efforts tied to the initiative are expected in the future.
