Trail Ride Denied Following Deadly Weekend in Moorhead

MOORHEAD, Miss.–In light of the murder of Phamous Harris, 22, Sunday evening in Moorhead, and the shooting of another person in the back at the intersection of Hwy. 3 and Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd., Sunflower County Supervisor Glen Donald asked that an upcoming trail ride not be approved by the Board of Supervisors.

Alderman Annette Fields came before the board, pleading for the board to find some way to stop the trail ride, which is set for June 21, but for which the permits have not been secured.

Fields said the city is short of police officers, with only three on payroll, and one of those being uncertified. Thousands of people are expected, with the actual location expected to be just outside the city limits.

“I’m pleading with you, please do not allow the trail ride on June 21,” said Moorehead “I wanted the board to understand and know the impact this trail ride would have on our city.”

The board heard that stopping the one trail ride in particular might not be legal. But, it might be possible to place a moratorium on all such events, based on the happening over the weekend, which occurred during a celebration.

“I think that you could consider the wishes of the city in this instance,” said Board Atty. Johnny McWilliams.

However, the board made the decision to go ahead and deny the trail ride permission to proceed, based on what happened over the weekend.
