COAHOMA COUNTY, Miss. — The Coahoma County Sheriff’s Office warned residents this week about phone scammers impersonating deputies and pressuring people to pay alleged fines or turn themselves in, officials said.
In a post on the department’s Facebook page, the sheriff’s office said several county residents have reported receiving calls from people claiming they had outstanding warrants or had missed court dates. The callers then try to force victims into making payments over the phone or “turning themselves in,” the post said.
“Law enforcement will never call you to request payment for a warrant, fine, or missed jury duty,” the post read. It added that deputies will never request payment through gift cards, cash apps or wire transfers.
Anyone who receives a suspicious call is urged to hang up immediately and contact the sheriff’s office directly using the department’s official phone number — not a number supplied by the caller, the post said. Officials asked residents to share the warning to help protect others.
