Greenville Fire Department and Community Partners Lead Storm Relief Efforts Across Washington County

GREENVILLE, Miss. — As winter weather moved through the Mississippi Delta, the Greenville Fire Department expanded its role beyond emergency response, partnering with local organizations and businesses to deliver food and storm supplies across Washington County.

Fire Chief Ruben Brown, who has led the department since 2013, said preparation began before the storm arrived. Vehicles were fueled, staffing was secured and crews were positioned to ensure rapid response to emergencies throughout the city.
“Preparedness is key,” Brown said.

Despite icy conditions, firefighters continued responding to numerous fire calls while also distributing meals and essential supplies, including shovels, toiletries and pastries. Some firefighters volunteered on their days off to help meet the increased demand.

Relief efforts reached communities including Silver City, Hollandale and Arcola.
Brown credited Mississippi Rapid Response Coalition as a leading force in launching the initiative. He also recognized the City of Greenville, Walmart, Lowe’s, local churches and Carlos Brothers of Keeping My Brothers Strong, along with individual donors.

“We definitely could not have done it without them,” Brown said, thanking partners who contributed to the effort.

Brown said the department’s outreach will continue beyond the immediate storm response, with a focus on strengthening community relationships and improving disaster preparedness.

“Just from going out to the communities … boots on the ground, I see efforts and things that need to be done,” Brown said. “I see a partnership with those communities to help build up those communities in any way that we can.”

He said future efforts may include installing smoke alarms and providing food, clothing and other necessities even after conditions stabilize.

Among the department’s partners was Carlos Brothers, CEO of Keeping My Brothers Strong. Brothers founded the organization in 2018 after losing three family members in close succession, which he said fueled his passion for service.
During the winter weather, Brothers prepared approximately 250 gallons of soup — about five large commercial-sized pans — serving the homeless and families in need across the region.

Brown said the department remains available to residents still experiencing storm-related hardships.

“We’re here 24 hours a day,” Brown said. “Our motto is our family protecting your family. And so we’re here to serve.”
