MOUND BAYOU, Miss. — As he begins his second term in 2026, Mound Bayou Mayor Leighton Aldridge is reflecting on the city’s history of resilience while promoting an upcoming film premiere that revisits a pivotal moment in the community’s past.

In a message to residents, Aldridge highlighted the significance of the 1982 “Caravan of Hope,” a large-scale show of support that brought hundreds of vehicles from Memphis to Mound Bayou during a time of financial crisis. He said the initiative continues to serve as a source of inspiration as the city confronts modern challenges, including infrastructure improvements and community revitalization.

Aldridge recalled attending meetings as a child, describing a strong sense of unity among residents despite uncertainty. That spirit, he said, culminated in a caravan of more than 800 vehicles accompanied by speeches aimed at encouraging the community.

City officials noted that in 1982, Mound Bayou faced severe financial difficulties, including frozen bank accounts and the potential loss of 19 acres of municipal property, such as City Hall, a park and a swimming pool. A partnership between local leaders and Memphis radio station WDIA, led by station manager Charles Scruggs, helped resolve the city’s debt and laid groundwork for future economic development efforts.

Aldridge said the lessons from that period remain relevant today as the city works to strengthen its economic base and preserve its identity.

The story of the 1982 caravan is the subject of a new film, “Caravan of Hope,” which is set to premiere Easter Sunday, April 5, 2026, in Mound Bayou.

The event will be held at the North Bolivar Consolidated School District Auditorium, located at 204 N. Edwards Ave.

The premiere will include a red carpet at 2 p.m., followed by the screening at 3 p.m. and a panel discussion.
The event is free and open to the public, though tickets are encouraged.
