GREENVILLE, Miss. — Greenville Fire Chief Ruben Brown announced his retirement during a City Council meeting, concluding a 33-year career with the city’s fire department.

Brown, who served as fire chief for 13 years, said the decision came after reflection on his time in leadership and his commitment to the department and community.

“I’ve served this city for over three decades, and I believe you deserve to hear directly from me,” Brown said. “There comes a time in leadership when you must discern whether you are still in a position to effectively lead, or whether transition is necessary for the good of the organization.”

Greenville Mayor Errick D. Simmons praised Brown’s tenure, highlighting his leadership and long-standing service to the city.

“With over 33 years with the city fire department and for 13 years as fire chief, Chief Brown has led with courage, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to protecting lives and property,” Simmons said in a statement.

Simmons also recognized Brown’s broader impact, including his role as the first African American president of the Mississippi Fire Association and his efforts to mentor firefighters and support community initiatives.

Brown’s career spanned more than three decades of emergency response, leadership and service to the Greenville community.

City officials have not announced when a successor will be named.
