Greenville Looks to Add Cameras and Increase Pay for Police

With the negative consequences of crime in Greenville taking their toll, the public safety committee is looking into taking several steps to help improve the quality of life and safety in the community.

The addition of one “safety camera” and several mobile cameras is expected to bring an extra layer of protection for citizens and will provide important information to the police. The vote was unanimous for the council to investigate cost and effectiveness.

While adding the cameras, the council also heard from Police Chief Marcus Turner who wants to increase pay for Greenville Police and Fire to remain competitive and stop losing officers to larger areas with better pay.

How would an extra $4,600 a year per officer be paid for?

Chief Turner suggested LOWERING the number of officers and using the leftover money to pay those remaining on the force more.

Surely putting fewer police on the streets will mean less crime…right?
