TERRY, Miss.–Law enforcement agencies from all over the Delta and the state are lifting up Hinds County Deputy Martin Shields, Jr., 37, who was shot and killed Sunday evening while on a domestic call in Terry in southern Hinds County.

“Our prayers are with his brothers and sisters at the HCSO and his family at home,” said the Panola County Sheriff’s Dept., in a Facebook post.

“A hero. This kind of senseless tragedy is amongst some things this side of Heaven we will never understand. Things so painful to endure you think you can’t withstand, in these times we must rely on God as we continue to protect and serve,” read a post from the Tunica County Sheriff’s Dept.

“There are so many different lives that will forever be affected by this tragic incident. Family, co-workers, and friends are left to pick up the pieces, forever knowing that they didn’t get a chance to say goodbye,” read a post from Yazoo County Sheriff Jeremy McCoy.

“As a law enforcement officer we never know what we will encounter. Nothing is ever the same. Each encounter is so different. Each call could be our last. But there is a God in Heaven that sits high and looks low and needed some extra protection so he sent for one is his faithful few.”

Hinds County Sheriff Tyree Jones said Shields’ killer, Eric Brown, died in the house where Shields was shot. But, it is not yet clear if the wound was self-inflicted.

Two women were shot and are in the hospital.

Shields was a veteran of law enforcement and had been on the job with Hinds County for nine months. He previously served as a Jackson Police officer. His father is a retired Jackson firefighter and a reserve deputy, serving on the same force as his son.
