A man killed in a propane tank explosion Tuesday in Flora was identified Wednesday morning.

According to Madison County Sheriff Randy Tucker, Rodney Herndon was filling a propane tank when it exploded killing him.

Herndon was a firefighter in Cleary and Florence.

A post on the Star Volunteer Fire Department Facebook page said Herndon was a “true treasure”.

“He was the true definition of selfless service,” the post stated. “He was a mentor, a devoted family man, a devout Christian, and a loving servant of his community.

“Please join us in praying for Rodney’s family, as well as the members of Cleary Fire Department, Florence Fire Department, and the rest of the Rankin County Fire Service.”

The Medical Science Academy at Florence High School also remembered Herndon in a Facebook post.

“He has served our Academy many times with the passion to teach future healthcare providers of the emergency response,” the post stated. “He taught us how to see accidents in the eyes of the first on the scene. He will truly be missed.”
